Zack Calandra Play-by-Play Announcer
For more than 35 years, Zack Calandra has been a familiar voice in the Verde Valley sports community. Originally from the East Coast, now local resident, Zack has spent decades following and covering Mingus Union athletics, bringing play-by-play coverage and storytelling to generations of athletes, coaches, and fans.
In addition to his extensive coverage of Mingus sports, Zack has covered 13 years of men’s and women’s basketball at Yavapai College and five years of basketball at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He also followed Sedona Red Rock girls basketball throughout their championship runs in the early 2020s, providing local coverage of some of the area’s most memorable athletic achievements.
Sports have always been a family affair for Zack. All three of his children graduated from Mingus Union High School and competed as student-athletes. His oldest daughter, Heather, was a member of three consecutive state championship track and field teams, earned four individual state titles, and went on to compete at the NCAA Division I level on scholarship. His son, Peter, continued his athletic career on a Division II baseball scholarship. His youngest daughter Hope, is currently pursuing a Psychology degree, to become a Forensic Psychologist.
Beyond broadcasting, Zack has dedicated 23 years to coaching youth sports in the Cottonwood community, helping develop young athletes both on and off the field.
For Zack, covering local sports has never simply been a job, it’s a passion. Through ZCAL Sports, he remains committed to showcasing the athletes, teams, and stories that make the Verde Valley sports community special.

Located in Cottonwood, AZ, Mingus Union High School competes in the AIA 4A division within the Grand Canyon region. The school boasts a strong athletic tradition, highlighted by the 1997 football state championship, the 2007 football runner-up finish, back-to-back baseball state titles in 2008 and 2009, and the 1995 boys’ basketball championship runner-up finish, all of which were covered by Play-by-Play announcer Zack Calandra. The Marauders have built a proud athletic tradition, earning numerous championships across several other sports, including multiple state tiltes in track and field and wrestling.
